2023 Bologna Tramway – Red Line
The new tramway network in Bologna has been organized into four interconnected lines. The first, designed and under construction, is the Red Line, which has obtained funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Its overall development is approximately 15 km for the line connecting the Emilio Lepido Terminal with the terminus located at the Faculty of Agriculture, to which are added the 1.3 km of the northern branch that leads to the Fiera/Michelino Terminal. The Executive Project was developed on the basis of the Definitive Project, drawn up by another design group and approved in July 2021.

WHAT
The project’s area concerned the 15 km of Line for which the landscape design defined both the Urban Insertion and Green Works interventions.
The main objective of the Urban Insertion was the best possible integration between the new infrastructure and the urban context, with the design of the vast area of Borgo Panigale currently not urbanized in which important road junctions will converge, two terminus stops, the Tramway depot, parking lots and the new Urban Park of Borgo Panigale of approximately 38,500 square meters with a system of squares, play areas and equipped sports.
The Green Works were divided into three types:
- important landscape works: in Borgo Panigale an urban forest with 856 new trees, the public park with 260 new trees and the urban forest in the Pilastro district with 44 new oaks;
- green works with the planting of 1,560 new trees for the integration of the tramway with the existing urban areas and the strengthening of the connections between the different ecological, natural and landscape components;
- green areas for new public car parks, green roofs, ground cover and shrub species.
The Census detected 1,955 trees, with the felling of 713 and the transplanting of 36, in addition to 2,416 new trees. The overall final balance is 3,658 trees (+1,703 trees compared to the current state).
Applying the BENEFITS system for the calculation of the CO2 stored by the newly planted trees (all considered at maturity), we have:
- CO2 assimilated equal to 665.3 tCO2/year;
- CO2 lost due to felling equal to 215.8 tCO2/year;
for a total absorption capacity of 449.5 tons of CO2/year.
